1 -- The nurse needs to be aware of the patient’s cultural and religious beliefs. The patient stating that the newborn has a genetic disorder because a stranger gave the baby the “evil eye” is evidence that the patient believes this is the cause of the disorder. This information does not suggest that the patient needs psychiatric counseling or that the patient is not going to be a good mother. The nurse cannot make the decision to not have healthcare dollars spent trying to change the patient’s opinion of why the baby has a genetic disorder since this is beyond the scope of the nurse.
