1 -- There are three types of painful stimuli: mechanical, chemical, and thermal. Mechanical causes of pain occur from a spasm, compression, or extreme muscle stretch or contraction. A muscle tear creates pain from a mechanical source. The pain of a myocardial infarction is an example of a chemical source. A burn or frost bite are examples of pain from a thermal source.
