3 -- Chronic nonmalignant pain is non-life-threatening pain that nevertheless persists beyond the expected time for healing. Chronic lower back pain falls into this category. No mention was made of malignancy being a cause of the pain. Back pain is typically categorized as chronic pain. Recurrent acute pain is characterized by relatively well-defined episodes of pain interspersed with pain-free episodes.
