4 -- Psychogenic pain is experienced in the absence of any diagnosed physiologic cause or event and involves a long history of severe pain. Psychogenic pain is real, and may in turn lead to physiologic changes, such as muscle tension, that may produce further pain. Phantom pain involves an amputation. No mention was made of a surgical situation. Central pain is the result of a lesion in the brain.
