Patient’s having a hemolytic reaction to blood will experience dyspnea, urticaria, fever, hypotension, lumbar pain, abdominal pain, chills, and nausea and vomiting. Symptoms occur because of clumping of the RBCs, which block capillaries and the action of macrophages engulfing the clumped RBCs. The activity of the macrophages releases free hemoglobin. The patient will not have hypertension and will have tachypnea instead of bradypnea.
