What is the difference between centripetal force and centrifugal force?  Explain in what direction each force is acting and on what it is acting.

Centripetal force is the force due to acceleration around some sort of curve.  The force is always directed inwards towards the center.  Centrifugal, on the other hand, literally means center fleeing.  This represents the feeling of being pushed out and away from the center about which you are moving.  For example, in a car when you take a sharp left turn you feel like you are being pulled to the right.  So really, it is an effect of inertia.  Hope this helps.
