How do I write an equation for this word prob. Arnold has $1.70 in dimes and quarters.  He has 3 more dimes than quarters.  How many of each coin does he have.  I know the answer is 7 dimes and 4 quarters.  How do you write the equation to solve this?

q = quarters
d = dimes

q +3= d
0.10d + 0.25q = 1.70

Easy:  he's got some number of each coin, and all told their values add to 1.70 soooo....
 (0.10)d + (0.25)q = 1.70
d = q + 3

where d = number of dimes and q = number of quarters

First you have to know how to solve a system. Then you have to put it into a system

d= # of dimes
q= # of quarters

d+q=11
10d+25q=170

d = q + 3  (more dimes than quarters)

d * 0.1 + q * 0.25 = 1.70

substitute for d in the 2nd equation

(q+3)*0.1  + q * 0.25 = 1.70

.1q +.3 + .25 q = 1.70

.35 q = 1.40
q = 4

then you can solve for d
