2 -- Adequate protein is necessary for tissue healing and the production of antibodies and white blood cells (WBCs). Lack of adequate protein increases the risk of infection. Water provides hydration. Hydration is needed for the body but is not the key nutrient for the promotion of healing. Carbohydrates are needed for energy. Fats are a source of warmth and excess are stored for later use.
