A soccer ball is kicked from the ground with an initial speed v at an upward angle ?. A player a distance d away in the direction of the kick starts running towards the ball at that instant. What must be his average speed if he is to meet the ball just before it hits the ground? Give your answer in terms of g and the given variables (neglecting air resistance).

solve using variables. i simply can not seem to get it right.

We start with S = Vavg T = D - x(T) = D - Ux T; where D = d, Ux = U cos(theta), and S is the distance the runner must run to reach the impact point x(T) some T seconds after the ball is kicked.  We find T.

y(T) = 0 = Uy T - 1/2 g T^2; so that T = 2Uy/g = 2U sin(theta)/g is the total flight time.

Vavg = D/T - Ux = [Dg/2U sin(theta)] - U cos(theta); where g is g, D = d, U = v, and theta = ? in your notation.  QED.
