The nurse is caring for an older patient who is in the intensive care unit for sepsis. The youngest daughter can only visit with the patient in the evenings after visiting hours have ended. What can the nurse do to support family-centered care for the patient and daughter?
1. Provide permission for the daughter to visit the patient after visiting hours.
2. Encourage that the daughter call the patient on the telephone during the day.
3. Explain to the patient that the daughter can visit once intensive care is no longer needed.
4. Ensure the daughter that the patient is being well cared for and not to worry about visiting.

Rationale 1: The family is a constant in the patient’s life. To support family-centered care the nurse would provide permission for the daughter to visit the patient after visiting hours. (See Page 213 Importance of Family-Centered Care)
Rationale 2: The family is a constant in the patient’s life. Encouraging the daughter to call the patient on the telephone during the day does not support family-centered care. (See Page 213 Importance of Family-Centered Care)
Rationale 3: The family is a constant in the patient’s life. Explaining to the patient that the daughter can visit once intensive care is no longer needed does not support family-centered care. (See Page 213 Importance of Family-Centered Care)
Rationale 4: The family is a constant in the patient’s life. Ensuring the daughter that the patient is being well cared for and not to worry about visiting does not support family-centered care. (See Page 213 Importance of Family-Centered Care)
