1,2 -- Hyperparathyroidism affects the musculoskeletal, renal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and metabolic systems. Muscle atrophy is seen as a musculoskeletal effect. Increased resorption of calcium by the kidneys results in hypercalcemia. This patient could also demonstrate constipation, weight loss, and hypertension.
