1 -- In primary hypothyroidism, the source of the disorder emanates from the thyroid gland itself. In this case, laboratory analysis will indicate an elevated TSH, as the pituitary attempts to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone. Because of the disorder, the thyroid hormone levels T3 and T4 will be low.
