Why are Cepheid variable stars important for the study of the expansion of the universe?

(a)   There is a well-defined relationship between their period of oscillation and their intrinsic brightness.
(b)   They are so bright that they can be seen in even the most distant galaxies.
(c)   They provide a set of sharp absorption lines with which the Doppler shift of the galaxy can be measured.
