Which of these priority measures should a nurse include in the discharge care plan for a patient who had a sigmoidoscopy with benign polyp removal?
1. Contact primary healthcare provider if large amounts of flatus result.
2. Avoid heavy lifting for two weeks after procedure.
3. Report abdominal pain, fever, or chills.
4. Eat foods high in fiber, beginning the evening of the procedure.

3 -- The patient who has a sigmoidoscopy must report potential complications. Complications can manifest as abdominal pain, fever, or chills. Flatus after the procedure is anticipated, and does not warrant contacting the physician. Heavy lifting is to be avoided for only one week. High-fiber foods are to be avoided for 1-2 days.
