1,2,3 -- When teaching patients with fungal stomatitis, the patient should avoid use of tobacco and alcohol as they damage the oral mucosa and increase the risk for oral mucositis. Saline or sodium bicarbonate rinses are buffering agents that are gentler on the mucosa than drying alcohol-based preparations or lemon glycerin swabs. With fungal stomatitis live bacterial cultures in yogurt or buttermilk help fight the stomatitis. Cold drinks generally are more soothing than hot drinks, which should be avoided.
