A patient with a long history of chewing tobacco says, “I’ve been chewing for years. I’m not going to get cancer.” Which of the following would be an appropriate nursing response?
1. “Use of smokeless tobacco has been linked to oral cancer.”
2. “You are probably one of the lucky ones.”
3. “I guess you’re right.”
4. “It’s not my body.”

1 -- Reducing or eliminating tobacco use (smoking and smokeless tobacco) can significantly reduce the incidence of oral cancer. Emphasize the relationship between smokeless tobacco and oral cancer. The other options are non-therapeutic responses.
Don't forget to give me a thumbs up!
