I know that you need the roots to figure out the intersection points of a linear equation and parabola, i just don't understand why.

On a parabola the roots when you find x are the x intersection points of the graph, they are the answer to a quadratic equation.

The roots are the x-axis intersection points of a parabola. They occur where the curve crosses the x-axis. If the curve does not cross the x-axis, the roots are imaginary.
