could somebody do compare/contrast? and how our technology now could help better today compared to the technology then

San Francisco would fare far better now than it did in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Elevated freeway collapse was a significant problem in 1989; since then, elevated freeways have been structurally reinforced, and some stretches (such as the Embarcadero) have been removed outright. The Loma Prieta quake also triggered a flurry of earthquake retrofitting, and forced Bay Area communities to take a serious look at their building codes.
