I am fairly sure it is complementary base pairs. I could be wrong and you can track me down and beat me later if i am but that would be my answer. (and i am going into biology as a career). Hope that helps

(a)
The primary structure of DNA is the linear sequence of its 2'-deoxyribonucleotide  residues. The nucleotide residues of DNA are linked  by 3'-5' phosphodiester linkage. The esterification reaction between two nucleotides that results in the phosphodiester linkage. Each single strand of DNA is characterized by a backbone of alternating deoxyribose and phosphate groups  in phosphodiester linkage.
