Jimmys paycheck is directly proportional to the number of hours he works. If he earns $442 for working 17 hours, how much will he earn if he works 27 hours? Find the CONSTANT OF VARIATION, write the variation equation, and solve.

BTW, I know the answer is $702, but I don't know how to solve it properly to show work such as finding the constant variation and writing the variation equation. Please help. Thanks.

Jimmy earns $442 for 17 hours work.  This means he earns $26 an hour (442/17).  So the amount earned = K (a constant of variation) * number of hours worked, because Jimmy's earnings are linear.

So

E = 26 dollars per hour * 27 hours = 702 dollars.

442 divided by 17 = 26   the constant variation is 26
 26 times 27 = 702

set up an equation 17hoursX = $442 with X as the constant of variation between the number of hours worked and the amount of money made,
solve for X, X = 26
then plug the new situation into the equation
27hours*26 = $702

442 divided by 17 shows amount per hour, take that amount and times it by 27 hours, that will give you 702 now write it out in math form to show exactly what you did to find how much he made per hour, to total 442, then do the same thing to show how you found how much he would make if you did the hourly rate of 26 x 27 hours,

p = pay
h = hrs worked
k = constant of prop.

p = kh

So, k = p/h

----> k = 442/17 = 26

So, if he works 27 hours, he gets kh.

---> kh = 26*27 = 702 [-- units --]

17/442 = 27/x

You have to multiply 27 x 442 = 11,934 And then divide that by 17 = 702.

442/17=$26.00per hour
27 x 26=$702 for 27 hours
