Oh but they do....look at all the side effects: nausea, vomiting, alopecia (hair falling out), skin changes, etc.  They have a worse effect on faster reproducing tissue and that is why there are so many GI side effects.  Hair and skin are also fast growing tissue.

Because they target a specific viral enzyme, thymidine kinase (eg. acyclovir), viral DNA terminators (eg. valacyclovir),  or interfere with viral binding sites (eg. famiciclovir). All that being said, while they work for specific viruses (you pick the drug based on the virus), they all have side effects, some of them pretty serious.
