Potential problems may arise because integration between functions and divisions is not always easy. Vertical organization usually calls for long lines of communication and "reporting up." This makes it difficult for a company to respond quickly to changes in a market or provide new innovation because keeping each division updated means spending time doing so. The primary structure of business since the Industrial Revolution has been vertical organization. This traditional pyramidal management has its benefits because there is ultimately one person in charge and a clear point of authority for decisions. However, in the early 1990s, vertical organization structures were criticized as being overspecialized, fragmented, and inflexible. Some businesses, such as Ford Motor Company and Barclay's Bank, found that they were more successful when they organized differently and formed management groups around areas of specific production.
