a) because only HCO3- ions are produced upon dissociation, and such ions are alkaline
b) because protons (H+) and bicarbonate ions are both released by RBCs into the plasma, where they neutralize each other
c) because protons produced upon dissociation are absorbed by hemoglobin
d) because dissociating the acid eliminates the acidity
