I know that concentrated sodium chloride solution can be electrolysed to form sodium hydroxide.  My question is, can this be done at home if I dissolve large amounts of table salt in tap water, and then create a simple set-up with a few batteries and wires?

Has anybody tried this yet?
Even if tap water is not suitable, I can distill tap water to form pure water.  Would I still be able to do this experiment?

Tap water is probably not the best water source to use. In chemistry labs they probably mix it with deionized water, so you may have to go onto a science website to buy it if you can't find it locally.
