Richie was basically a good kid; he always wanted to do what was right.  However, his father and older brother were sent to prison for various serious crimes.  People in the community thought that Richie would be just like them and treated him accordingly.  Eventually Richie came to adopt the definition that others placed upon him as a criminal just waiting to happen and he actually began engaging in illegal acts. The theory that explains this is:
