1 -- Stroke is usually caused by an embolus from the ascending aorta or aortic arch, which travels through the heart into the vessels leading to the brain. Plaque inside a coronary artery would travel downstream and lodge in a smaller vessel in the heart. Heart failure does not cause a stroke. Stating that no one knows what causes strokes is not a true statement; blood clots and ruptured vessels cause strokes.
