2,4,5 -- The steps in tracheostomy care include suctioning the patient prior to care using sterile technique; wearing a clean glove to remove the dressing; wearing sterile gloves to clean and place a new dressing; using hydrogen peroxide to remove crusted secretions but flushing with normal saline afterwards to prevent skin irritation; removing the inner cannula and cleaning with hydrogen peroxide; rinsing the inner cannula with normal saline; and placing a new commercially-prepared dressing or using gauze refolded into a V shape.
