A 20-year-old patient is demonstrating difficulty with near vision. The nurse realizes that this finding is

20 is a a fairly young age and this demonstration is not normal (2) nor is consistent with aging (1). It is not (3) because presbyopia is a condition for the elderly has the difficultly with seeing near objects diminished over time and is not sudden.


(4) may be present from birth or become present later in life due to genetics or it can exist for a while due to an infection.

Changes in near vision, especially in patients over 45, can indicate presbyopia, which is impaired near vision that results from a loss of elasticity of the lens related to aging. In younger patients, this condition is referred to as hyperopia or farsightedness.
