I mean at the same time - Darwin was formulating his theory of biological evolution, Gregor Mendel, a monk living in a monastery in eastern Europe, was grappling with another concept.

What are your thoughts on Inheritance as far as Gegor?

Inheritance and evolution are two completely different subjects.  I don't understand what the question is here.  

Mendel was not thinking about evolution, and Darwin was completely ignorant of the mechanisms behind evolution.  They did not concern him at the time.

They are certainly not in opposition to each other.  It is senseless to try to compare them.
