Using your phone while it's charging can damage the battery - This is why the cords for chargers are so short.

I don't think phone makers care if their device fails after a year. They stay in business by selling the same device with upgraded features year after year. Hence to answer your question, they don't make them longer so that they don't have to spend money on more material. If they do, it means more money to make bigger boxes and less profit
