An argon-ion laser produces a cylindrical beam of light whose average power is 1.06 W. How much energy is contained in a 2.49-m length of the beam?

Well, travelling at the speed of light, it takes the 2.49m long beam 2.49/3E8=8E-9 seconds to pass a given point.  So the energy contained=1.06 x 8E-9=8.49E-9 joules.
