Proline residues induce distortions of around 20o in the direction of a helix. This is because proline cannot form a regular alpha-helix due to steric hindrance arising from its cyclic side-chain which blocks the main chain NH group. Proline causes 2 hydrogen bonds in the helix to be broken. Helices containing proline are usually long because shorter helices would be destabilized.
