With regards to site-directed mutagenesis using PCR. Why is it important that the primers be fully complementary to one another, that is, that the ends of the primers do not over lap?

Well, when there are one or more mismatches within the two complementary sequences, the two sequences are considered to be only partially complementary to one another. Essentially, this causes errors in the gene code that is joined together.
