Myelin increases the conductance of a fiber. It essentially acts like the plastic insulation around an electrical wire. If fibers arent myelinated, electrical charge traveling down the nerve will be able to escape through the membrane (as ions) slowing down the signal rate and lowering its amplitude. So insulate, myelinated fibers are faster.
