Diversity of flora and fauna in the Daintree Rainforest?

"The Daintree Rainforest is a tropical rainforest north of Mossman, Queensland, on the coast, north of Cairns in tropical far north of Australia. At around 1200 square kilometers the Daintree is the largest continuous area of rainforest on the Australian mainland. Named for Richard Daintree, part of the forest is protected by the Daintree National Park and drained by the Daintree River.

The Daintree Rainforest contains 30% of frog, marsupial and reptile species in Australia, and 65% of Australia's bat and butterfly species. 18% of bird species in the country can be found in this area. There are also over 12000 species of insects. All of this diversity is contained within an area that takes up 0.2% of the landmass of Australia."

Birdwatching In The Daintree: Daintree is internationally recognised as one of Australia's premier birdwatching locations with many overseas and local bird enthusiasts coming to our area for this specific purpose. It has been documented that over 430 species of birds have been recorded in the area encompassing the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef region of Australia. This is more than half the bird species for the entire continent.

Freshwater Fish: It is of little surprise that the Wet Tropics of North Queensland contains one of the richest and most diverse freshwater fish faunas on the Australian continent, with about one third of Australia?s 190 or so species of endemic freshwater fishes having been recorded.

Butterflies: There are many colourful butterflies about the Daintree rainforest - triangles,leafwings, swallow-tails, sword-tails, cruisers, jezabels, blues and others.
 
Mangroves: The lower Daintree River estuary is home to an amazing diversity of life-forms both marine and terrestrial, with more than 150 fish species and over 100 crustaceans. The lower estuary is an important fuel-stop for visiting migratory waders and is home to numerous resident birds including up to eight kingfisher types. In any case it is one of the most beautiful eco-systems in Australia - not to be missed!

Crocodiles of the Daintree River: There are two species of crocodiles in Australia, the Saltwater and Freshwater species, and only the "salties" inhabit the Daintree River. It's scientific name is Crocodylus Porosus and the Daintree River has a population of about 70 adult crocodiles.

Reptiles: When one visits the Daintree, most will think of the Estuarine Crocodile, the largest reptile in Australia. But in looking further people will be amazed at the diversity of Reptiles found in and around the Daintree rainforest and mangrove habitats.
