Can someone please help with the following questions from Marieb Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual?

1. Name two cord-mediated reflexes.

2. Name two somatic reflexes in which the higher brain centers participate.

3. Can the stretch reflex be elicited in a pithed animal (that is, an animal in which the brain has been destroyed)?
Explain.

4. How do basic and learned or acquired reflexes differ?

This is what I have:  basic reflexes are inborn and acquired reflexes result from practice or repetition.

5. Name at least three factors that may modify reaction time to a stimulus.
This is what I have: sensitivity of the receptors
                             velocity of nerve conduction
number of neurons and synapses involved
                             speed of effector activation
6.  Why does response time increases when the subject has to react to a word stimulus?

Can someone help me with the rest?

Thanks

1. Name two cord-mediated reflexes.

By cord, I'm guessing you mean spinal cord. Recall that reflexes are not processed by they brain. There is an input, and then an output. Accidentally stepping on a tack causes your leg to jerk up. This is a reflex that begins with the nerves in you foot, the signal is sent to the cord, and an output is sent (your leg jerking up). Others could be touching a hot surface, getting a cut, the patella reflex of the knee.

2. Name two somatic reflexes in which the higher brain centers participate.

Pupillary light reflexes and superficial cord reflexes.

Explain.

Yes, even without the brain a stretch reflex only needs a afferent, control center, and motor fibers to be elicited. These components still stay intact if the brain has been destroyed.

How do basic and learned or acquired reflexes differ

Basic reflexes inherited your born with; learned and aquired reflexes are learned by repetition your not born with these.

6.  Why does response time increases when the subject has to react to a word stimulus?

Because it distracts you, it makes your reflex slow down, your body can not go as fast with two reflexes as with one.

For question

1. Can some examples of cord-mediated reflex be: patellar reflex, Achilles reflex, plantar reflex, and cross-extensor reflex?

2. Name two somatic reflexes in which the higher brain centers participate.

Pupillary light reflexes and superficial cord reflexes.

What are some examples of superficial cord reflexes? Can these be: pupillary light reflex, gag reflex, or corneal reflex?

Also, for this question

5. Name at least three factors that may modify reaction time to a stimulus.

I was wondering if there might be a different answer that can be related to this exercise.

Thanks for all your help.  Grinning Face
