Kevin and his wife have been trying to have a bay for the past 3 years. Kevin has just learned
from a fertility specialist that he has a hereditary form of male sterility involving nonmotile
sperm. His condition has been traced to defects in the cytoskeletal components of the sperm’s
flagella. As a result of this finding the physician asked Kevin if he had recurrent respiratory
tract infections. Kevin confirmed that indeed he has had colds, bronchitis, and influenza more
frequently than his friends. What is the connection between sterility due to nonmotile sperm
and frequent respiratory infections?

The genetic defect that caused the disruption in the cytoskeletal components of the sperm’s flagella can also cause disruption in the cytoskeletal components of the respiratory cilia. Defects in the respiratory cilia would inhibit the clearing of mucus and inhaled particles such as pathogens from the respiratory passageways and potentially lead to increase respiratory infections.
