Many of the changes that are related to thermoregulation are exacerbated by poor nutrition. Older adults have diminished appetite, impaired senses (thereby further diminishing appetite), reduced mobility, reduced income and they may lack a dinner companion. If you consider how many nutritious meals you prepare for just yourself, you can see how much of an impact the lack of another person to cook for impedes your desire to cook a meal for yourself. Additionally, older people suffer from digestion issues and reduced absorption of nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract. Women tend to be at greater risk than men. Poor nutrition elevates the risk and impact of chronic disease, diminishes the immune response, slows healing and increases the use of the health-care system and prescription medication.
