How does the respiratory system compensate for metabolic acidosis?

    Expels CO2 at a faster rate by increasing the breathing rate.
    Expels CO2 at a slower rate by decreasing the breathing rate.
    The respiratory system cannot compensate for metabolic acidosis, the renal system has to do that.
