How is distance determined to the nearest stars?  How far out can this technique be applied?  How many stars can be measured in this way?

"The parallax method has been most accurately applied by orbiting observatories. The Hipparcos satellite, in the 1990s, was able to measure distances to 300 light years with 10% or better accuracy, and provide some distance estimates out to 1000 light years. A couple of missions currently under development will improve on Hipparcos's precision by a factor of 100 or better, extending reliable measurements out to at least 30,000 light years."
