1 Yves Klein had an avid interest in judo and spiritual mysticism, which informed his diverse artistic production and his goal of freeing the creative essence in art from its material form. He used nude women as brushes to paint the canvas, accompanied by small string orchestra performances.
2 Yoshihara Jiro founded the Gutai collective of artists “to pursue the possibilities of pure and creative activity with great energy.” At the second Gutai Exhibition in 1956, Shozo Shimamoto created Hurling Colors (Fig. 33-5) by smashing bottles of paint against a canvas on the floor, recognizing destruction as part of creation.
3 Fluxus artists were more conceptual and deliberate in their actions. Artist Yoko Ono performed her work Cut Piece on stage while members of the audience were invited to use sewing shears to cut away bits of her clothing (Fig. 33-9). The work was charged with violence and eroticism.
4 Nam June Paik’s work TV Bra for Living Sculpture (Fig. 33-10) combined sculpture, technology, music, and performance and demonstrated the humor and sexual content often seen in Fluxus works. Designed to be worn by Charlotte Moorman while playing the cello, the device was wired so she could manipulate images broadcast on the screens with foot pedals and her musical technique.
