where nitrogen gas is converted into nitrogen containing molecules.
it is very imnportant as most organisms cant use nitrogen in its gas form

Nitrogen fixation is basically the process where N2 in the atmosphere is converted to other forms (ammonia, nitrate, NO2).  Plants and animals can use these other forms, but the N2 form is not particularly useful to organisms.

Nitrogen fixation most commonly occurs in the enviromnent by way of lightning or bacteria.
