The climate of the Amazon is characterized by the enormous amount of the region's rainfall and high temperatures. The rains leach minerals and nutrients out of the topsoil and move them quickly down to the water table, out of reach of most plants' roots. High temperatures speed the decomposition of leaf litter and the uptake of nutrients by plants, so the amounts of humus that remain are small, and the topsoil layer remains thin.
