Clustering crops in uniform fields greatly improves planting and harvesting efficiency. But monocultures decrease crop biodiversity so crops are more susceptible to pests that feed on particular crops. Entire fields can be destroyed in a short amount of time. Monocultures also are more likely to deplete soil nutrients. Increasing crop biodiversity introduces habitat for predators of pests. Diversity in crop cultures stresses soils less and is more environmentally balanced.
