Habitat fragmentation is the relative increase in the edge habitat over the interior habitat and increasing isolation of habitat patches. Bird species that thrive in the interior of forests may fail to reproduce when forced near the edge of a fragment of habitat. Their nests often are attacked by predators and parasites that favour open habitats surrounding the fragment or that travel along habitat edges.
