In addition to the extensive extraction of fossil fuels, ocean bottoms are mined for calcium carbonate and silica and for metals such as copper, zinc, silver, and gold. Salt and magnesium are extracted from the seawater. There is also a large potential to mine minerals scattered on the bottom of the deep ocean in the form of manganese nodules.
