Does anybody know exactly what Histone H1 does?

I know it helps pack the chromosome into the 30-nm fiber, but how?

Histone H1 is not present in the nucleosome bead; instead it is involved in the formation of higher-level chromatin structures.

In other words, it's linker DNA.  Smiling Face with Open Mouth

Histone H1 is one of the five main histone protein families which are components of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. Though highly conserved, it is nevertheless the most variable histone in sequence across species.

The linker histone, H1, interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomes and functions in the compaction of chromatin into higher order structures.
Hope that helps Slight Smile
