Poverty in low-income countries is more severe and widespread than it is in high-income countries. In the world as a whole, about 868 million people suffer from chronic hunger, leaving them less able to work and at risk for illness and disease. The typical adult in a low-income country not only does more physical labour than an adult in a high-income country, but also consumes just 2350 calories a day; the result is undernourishment and hunger.
