Summarize the demographic transition theory. Does the theory explain the industrialized nations and the least economically developed countries? Why or why not?

Demographic transition theory is the thesis that population patterns reflect a society's level of technological development. Stage 3, a mature industrial economy, is consistent with what we see in today's industrialized nations (birth rate drops, high living standards make raising children expensive, death rates decline, population growth slows). Low-income nations are characterized by Stage 2, the onset of industrialization (greater food supplies; scientific medicine; death rates decline but birth rates remain high, resulting in rapid population growth). The factors identified as different now that did not affect the industrialized nations may vary (e.g., current state of dependency of low-income nations).
