Relationship dialectics theory argues that people in a relationship experience dynamic tensions between pairs of opposing motives or desires. The tension between closedness and openness has to do with the conflict between the desire to be in a closed, exclusive relationship and the wish to be in a relationship that is open to different people. The tension between autonomy and connection involves the desire to remain an autonomous, independent individual and the wish to connect intimately to another person and to a relationship. The tension between novelty and predictability centers on the competing desires for newness, different experiences, and adventure on the one hand and for sameness, stability, and predictability on the other.
